Excerpt From "Tarot"Sometimes, when we look at a message the Tarot Cards have given us, the answers seem to disappear in the symbolism of the cards. We can become distracted from our original purpose to consider our options, and allow ourselves to begin to think, "These cards must be the answer to another question." This is one way we can distance ourselves from taking responsibility for reading something we may not be willing to accept as a response to our initial question. I am reminded of a client who asked a question about her business and the potential for a new project to prove successful. The cards the Tarot gave us to look at were: in the first position, Seven of Wands; in the middle position, Ace of Cups; and as an indicator of future outcome, the Two of Cups, reversed. Upon looking at these cards, her initial comment was, "obviously the cards want to let me know something about my love life and relationships. We can come back to my original question later." We all have difficulty reading cards on occasion. The words or symbols which come up for our inspection in answer to a question seem to differ greatly from categories we have unconsciously created, accepted or expect. For instance, we may have been taught that Cups bring information about love, relationships and the home environment. Swords are about communication, disharmony, verbal or mental activity. Wands indicate travel, creativity, action or play. Pentacle cards bring information about monetary transactions, possessions and work or health. Indeed, these categories are basic to an understanding of the messages indicated in the Tarot; but I am asking you to stretch your Tarot reading muscles and enlarge your perspectives on what the cards you are reading can mean with regard to the questions you are asking, or answering as the case may be! |
